About Tia Steyn Consulting

Tia Steyn has 25 years experience as an occupational therapist for adults. She has treated people with psychiatric diagnoses, hand injuries, work-related injuries, chronic pain and chronic disease.

Her career path has travelled through public, private, military and academic settings in both South Africa and Canada. Specialized training includes: functional capacity evaluation, hand therapy, pain management, sensory modulation, ergonomics and more. She has assisted thousands of clients to return to work and other activities.

Tia’s experience has culminated in a focus on mental health, including chronic pain. She carefully considers the person, occupation/activity and environment in her assessments and interventions, and offers a combination of approaches tailored for each individual, to help them reach their personal goals.

Pain management

Approaches may include PRT (Pain Reprocessing Therapy), PGAP (Progressive Goal Attainment Program), sensory modulation, psychoeducation, pain management strategies, recommendations for gentle movement activities like walking, hydrotherapy and yoga.

Mentoring and consulting

OT mentoring can include case discussions, report reviews, and how to incorporate sensory modulation in your practice.
Employers can request consultations regarding workplace sensory wellness, or regarding accommodations for workers with mental health or chronic pain limitations.

Sensory modulation

Identify your personal sensory profiles and learn to understand your sensory likes and dislikes. Learn how to apply easy strategies in daily life and work to improve calmness, focus and productivity. Suitable for individuals with chronic pain, ADHD, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Also a great mental wellness tool for healthy individuals, students, couples, and employees.

Return to work

Return to work services include an assessment of the relevant aspects (full functional capacity evaluations are not done), planning to prepare the client for return to work, GRTW (gradual return to work) planning and monitoring. May include coaching for return to work, job site visits and ergonomic assessments.

Exposure therapy

Prolonged exposure therapy for clients with PTSD, systematic desensitization for clients with phobia, trauma and eating disorders., and (to be added end of April 2023) exposure and response prevention for obsessive compulsive disorder. These services are usually provided in collaboration with a clinical counsellor or psychologist.
